THE VULCANOVA BUTTERFLY LOVERS LIMITED (SOLD) EDITION

We were very impressed by the look and presentation of this watch. Since we have never posted any lady watch before in this blog, we thought it would be appropriate to make the first entry of such a watch for the benefit of lady readers.

The subject watch is the authentic limited edition of Vulcanova collections ‘The Butterfly Lovers’ launched by Vulcain in commemoration of its 150th anniversary. Immaculately crafted in mother of pearl on the dial, two simmering butterflies relate to one of the most famous Chinese love stories, known as the ‘Butterfly Lovers’.

Vulcain immortalised the story similar to the Romeo and Juliet by launching the limited edition of the Vulcanova in 2007 dedicated to sensitive women with poetic souls and exquisite taste.

The curved shape of its 36mm x 28.95mm polished steel case delicately molds the wrist and accentuates the refinement of the dial. Beneath the dainty pair of wings beats a subtle watch mechanism driven by the mechanical self-winding V-53 movement that drives the hour, minute and second functions, and has a 40 hour power reserve.

The limited edition of 150 units signifying 150 years of Vulcain existence is available in three different versions. This impeccable timepiece comes with a red wooden lacquered musical box, a certificate and a two year-international warranty.

The brand new unit under certificate no. 081/150 readily available at an Ipoh watch gallery is retailed at RM11,950.00 (Ringgit: Eleven thousand nine hundred and fifty only).

This elegant and petite timepiece projects a mesmerising beau and most ideal as an awesome wedding anniversary or birthday present or parting gift.

Tetapi Wan tetap Wan.

Kini syiling misteri milik saya.

CERTINA ‘ROBERT KUBICA’ LIMITED EDITION

Real proud to see the PETRONAS logo prominently displayed on the driver’s suit, helmet and the F1 BMW SAUBER car. More so, after podium finish by Robert Kubica at the second last leg of F1 2009 season, the Brazil GP. The short association of the young Polish driver, BMW, Sauber and Petronas however come to an end with the announcement by BMW Sauber on 29 July 2009 that the team will not participate in 2010 F1 season. The gap left allowed for 1Malaysia team to sneak in as the new kid on the block for 2010 new season.

On 03 September 2007, Certina launched the sports watch, DS Podium ‘Robert Kubica’ Special Edition series at the Olympic Center in Warsaw, Poland to commemorate his successes. Produced at a limited series of only 1984 units, a figure inspired by the birth year of the young driver, the watch features Robert’s personal colours as seen on his protective racing helmet.

The caseback carries the individual serial number of the unit and is equipped with a transparent window to show the ETA 7750 Automatic Valjoux workings of the watch, as well as the filigreed silhoutte of Robert Kubica’s helmet and signature.

Managed to secure a pre-owned unit no. 0255/1984 on sale in Ipoh. This limited edition unit comes with an original box, a certificate and an international warranty till 18 April 2010.

THE FOUR TRAVELLERS...all for the sick bay

I received a parcel containing four watches, a Godiva, a Croton, a Crosby and a Perfine from Ijan (Jamlama) this morning. Thanks to Poslaju for the fast delivery of this simple but tidy and safe pack. Really surprise to see the beautiful and clean dials especially the Godiva. Apart from the normal wear and tear, they looked real OK. Thanks bro...You selected the lot, very well (First time beli jam tak tengok gambar pun).

True enough the engines are not working but they still look marvellous. All were showing good time at more or less 10.12. For how long they are at that time, ntah lah...

I thought it’s best to get my watch doctor to have a look and diagnose.

So in the afternoon I trooped off to Ipoh. Ah Lek, the doctor, first picked up and opened the Perfine and with one blow, the second hand started to move. Wow, jam pun reti takut sama doktor ke?

Never mind, I still feel that those watches need to stay with the doctor for a while. He can resuscitate and resurrect the engines the way he knows best. The liberty to have a first look is always his but I kind of figure out my available options!

So, in the meantime, have a good rest in the sick bay, my friends. I will sure come back when the four of you are healthy.

Looking forward to exercise my options on other parts of the watches soonest.

More stories, later...

SEKALUNG TAHNIAH KEPADA LAT, Ikon 1Malaysia Perak

Kesian Perak kalau lambat, tentu pasti negeri lain rembat...udah mula berbau pun.

Salam

NOW AND THEN...COMES ANOTHER OMEGA

Our quest to find nice and good genuine vintage and pre-owned watches and clocks at reasonable prices has taken us to many different places meeting many new interesting friends from all walks of life at new places hearing many happy, sad and sob stories.

I guessed the relationship we built over time after many transactions somehow has developed a kind of trust for quite a number of sellers to provide us the opportunity of first option to see, scrutinise, ponder and consider to purchase a particular watch. We purchase at reasonable prices mutually agreed. Most of the time, after seeing the watch, we ended up taking the option because it is so difficult to refuse the option when a pretty good watch is already in the clasps.

This week, we ended buying another three wristwatches including a rather nice Omega Seamaster Chronometer gold top with semi gold metal strap. This 16 year old timepiece comes together with a nice original box complete with the certificate and invoice. Even the American Express purchase slip showing the actual purchase price is still intact.

When purchasing a rather pricy pre-owned watch, though sounds like repeating ourselves, we felt it is always prudent to request for original box and certificate plus the original invoice.

In case of vintage watches where original certificate is no longer available, please request for a certificate of purchase from the seller. Easy then to keep the inventory and to keep track of the numerous purchases over the period.

We brought this Omega Seamaster to our watch dealer for valuation this morning. Before the valuation process, we had the privilege to a treat of pre-owned Rolexs, Certina Robert Kubica Limited Edition and a diamond studded Concord.

Perhaps another story another day on the Rolex or Certina Kubica.

No matter, surprise to hear from our watch dealer that we actually secured the Omega Seamaster at a bargain albeit a small one...

FATIN'S CONVOCATION

This morning the whole family, except Angah, attended Fatin's convocation at the International Islamic University Malaysia main campus in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia.

There were so many parents with smiling and cheerful faces, with their own stories to tell about the success episodes of their sons and daughters at today's convocation. Proud with their kids' achievements and satisfied with their own sacrifices.

"Lots have been achieved towards securing the first degree but a lot more work need to be done to stake a place in this challenging world. Use the knowledge gained throughout the stay at the university to the best of your ability in making this world a better place to live". said Dato' Seri Syed Arabi Idid, the IIUM Rector, advising the graduates in his opening address.

To my lovely daughter, Fatin, congratulations, well done and...syukur!

A TIMEPIECE CALLED SMITHS

Some time back we managed to purchase a SMITHS mantle piece from a good friend. It has served us very well chiming every fifteen minutes. Occasionally, we allowed it to take a break for a few days before winding it again just to give our ears the necessary break.

This morning we decided to purchase a SMITHS timepiece just to keep the mantle piece accompany and to add another colour to our wristwatch collections.

SMITHS is an English brand name as illustrated prominently at the bottom of the dial of this Shockproof automatic wristwatch.

Just a bit of history about the SMITHS watch making.

The company was founded by Samuel Smith in London in 1851 as a clock and watch business. At the start of the 20th century, the age of the early automobiles, the Company produced the first British odometer ("mileometer") and speedometer.

In the 1930s SMITHS agreed a trading deal with Lucas whereby the two would not compete in certain areas and Lucas took on part of SMITHS non-instrumentation assets. Smiths became the dominant supplier of instruments to British motorcar and motorcycle firms. From 1915 SMITHS had a factory at Cricklewood, north London and later moved their Headquarters there.

Apparently, by the early seventies, SMITHS watches found themselves facing financial difficulty. An appeal to the British Government then for assistance were rebuffed by the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

The British Government was rumoured to have earmarked millions of pounds to help finance John DeLorean with an upstart automobile company to be headquartered in Belfast, Ireland. This left little or no money in the coffers to bail out the aging watch firm.

It was reported that Timex bought out the financially troubled SMITHS and, subsequently destroyed the tooling and spare parts. For what it's worth, SMITHS is apparently still in business as an aircraft instrument manufacturer. Others have reported that various SMITHS parts still survive and can be obtained in the UK.

GOING TO THE MOVIE

Going to the movie has always been an exciting time out for the family. So when the kids are back in town yesterday, we trooped off, in the afternoon, to TGV at Kinta City to watch ‘Papadom’, Afdlin Shauky’s latest film to hit the screen.

Shot in late 2007, Papadom slogged two long years to reach the cinemas, apparently due to some technicalities, whatever that maybe.

I managed to watch a few of Aflin Shauki’s work in the likes of Buli, Baik Punya Cilok, Sumolah. Found those films to be refreshing and interesting and of course not forgetting his acting in Cuci, directed by his pal, Hans Isaac.

Coming out from the cinema, we shared the same feeling. Satisfied, entertained, encouraged, proud and touched by the high quality of local films produced such as Papadom. Once again Afdlin has managed to put forward to the market a non stereo-type film about human stories. Stories you and I like to see. Away from the boring norm Bollywood winding love and sobbing stories.

Norkhairiah, Farid Kamil, Vanida Imran carried their roles well. I thought Liyana Jasmay and Que Haidar were superb. Afdlin Shauki as 'Saadom', the nasi kandar man was excellent. Harun salim Bachik as Shukor was hilarious. Little wonder this film bagged many awards at the Malaysia Film Festival last year.

The only sad thing is hardly three rows were filled up and it was the first day showing!

Just wonder why our media seldom give good coverage on positive news regarding our local film industry like Papadom, this beautiful dramedy (drama-comedy) that can make you laugh at the top of your voice and wet your eyes then.

Except for coverage by the Star today, I failed to see our papers giving BIG coverage on this film. Instead many papers especially the Malay Sunday papers somehow like to pick on negative tidbits like divorce cases, khalwat, dadah  among artists. C’mon guys, give credit where and when it’s due.

Give these young directors and artists some break. Their works need to be given front page coverage!

WRIST WATCH ANNUAL 2009

This annual caught my attention while browsing through a range of pre-owned watches at a KL watch outlet last month. Priced at RM130.00 per copy, I find it very  informative and exciting with its contents of old and new models.

The little article on how Peter and Aletta Stas, a Dutch couple, started out as a small watch manufacturer with big ideas that developed into an iconic timepiece in the Heart Beat model is most fascinating.

Frederique Constant, the couple's signature brand, currently manufactures something like 55,000 timepieces per year. More stories and models can be found in the 2009 Annual.

Picked up a few unfamiliar brand names such as MB & F, UTS, Bathys, Louis Moinet, Backes & Strauss, Barthelay, BRM, Benzinger, Clerc and many more.

For those watch lovers who have yet to own a copy, I think it's worth  grabbing one.

There are too many models that can wobble the eyes and drool the mouth with prices that can rinse the pockets dry.

LUBUK JAM

Thanks Bro...
